Jersey Ends Season With Springfield Buzzer Shot
Friday, February 15, 2019 - 20:03
night East Alton-Wood River Memorial Gym. The Cyclones advance next to the Taylorville Sectional to face Charleston.
Jersey’s Clare Breden, who led the Panthers with 22 points, had tied the game with 11 seconds left on a shot in the lane, but SHG, with no time outs, was able to get the ball to Gilmore, whose shot found all net.
Abby Manns added eight points for Jersey, while the Cyclones’ Sophie Lowis led all scorers with 24 points. Peyton Vorreyer added 15 for SHG. The Panthers finished 24-9, while the Cyclones go to 26-6.
“I thought we deserved a better fate,” Jersey’s head girls basketball coach Kevin Strebel said. “The girls battled, battled and battled. We have people who are playing hurt physically and others playing tonight after being sick.” Strebel did not comment about the officiating in the game, but there were some who questioned calls throughout the contest that didn’t exactly go Jersey’s way.
Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin was a taller team, but Strebel said he didn’t think size mattered that much in the game because of the heart of his team. “There were a couple missed free throws and a few times we gave them an opportunity and they took advantage of it,” Strebel said. He continued saying it was difficult to go into the locker room with losing such a close game, but he knows his kids will be back next year and hopefully be in the same spot.
