Bethalto Regional Soccer Wrap Up
Marquette Catholic moved on with a 7-0 win over Civic Memorial.
Jacob Liles had the Panthers’ only goal in the first half that tied the game 1-all. “We battled and had chances,” said Jersey head boys soccer coach Scott Burney. “Jacob Liles scored after they got their score and we fought back. The boys executed game plan ideally in the first half. When we got down, Columbia took advantage of it. We play to win all the time. I have zero club players but a lot of kids who have a burning desire to win have to play want to play.” Burney said his seniors this year played a huge role in his team.
Wyatt Freand ends a great career and likely will play in college. Burney also singled out seniors David Shaffer and Brayden Crawford for their commitment to the team.
CM head boys soccer coach Derek Jarman said Marquette Catholic has elite players at every position. “We won the kickoff and they put it in the back of our net within 20 seconds,” he said. “We hung our heads after that. Marquette produces some of the top soccer players in the state year after year. We had four seniors this year. I hope our players learned a lot about things this year. We are bringing back every person who scored a goal and had an assist this year and our goalie. Our kids play basketball and baseball and other sports and it is difficult to play against a team that plays club soccer in the off season. Marquette’s boys have played club soccer since they were in kindergarten.”
Marquette’s Chris Hartrich and Stephen Hasse had two goals apiece and Aaron Boulch, Trenton Dietiker and Ben Moehn also had single goals each.
CM ends its season with a 10-16 overall mark.
The championship is set for 11 a.m. Saturday in Bethalto with 16-2-4 Marquette against 19-2-3 Columbia.
