Staunton head coach Jeanene Lucykow said her team made some errors in the beginning, but then became fired up to take the championship. “We have a great group of seniors and play really well as a team, but we don’t have that standout player or defensive player,” she said. “The best quality about our team is we play as a team.” Staunton closes with Carrollton Monday night at Staunton, then plays at Roxana on Tuesday and at Gillespie on Thursday. Lucykow stressed there was one week of regular season play left, then they play at Greenville to begin the post season next week.
Jersey head girls volleyball coach Justin Wilhite said he was proud of the effort his team gave against Staunton in the championship. “We came out and were down by an 11-5 score in the first game after making some errors,” he said. “We did well through the day. I am upset with our play in the championship. This week is our last regular season week and we have senior night on Tuesday, which will be tough. This is the best group of seniors I have seen in my life.” Jersey hosts Triad on Tuesday night for Senior Night.
Marquette Catholic head volleyball coach Sue Heinz said her team started out strong against Staunton, but knew how tough a match it would be. “We played well in the championship and covered the court well, and hit the ball offensively,” she said. “We came in on fire against CM and finished strong, Carrollton was a slow game for us. Against Triopia, I think we played a good defensive match and came up with a third-place win.” Marquette defeated Concord Triopia for third place 25-17, 16-25, 15-12. Marquette meets Ursuline Academy Monday in St. Louis. Brooklyn Taylor had 18 kills in the tournament for Marquette and was a dominant factor.
