Roxana’s Michael Ilch lugged the pigskin 31 times for 139 yards and had 13- and 2-yard TD runs. Bobby Smith and Blake Funk had 41 and 40 yards respectively to lead Southwestern in rushing. Funk is only a freshman. Ilch ran 13 yards for Roxana’s first score in the second quarter, then had the 2-yard TD in the third quarter.
“I think Roxana executed better than we did and offensively, we didn’t take advantage of some of the opportunities,” Keith said. It was the first game of the year and we know we have some things to fix. We knew we would have a tough game, but the kids played hard.”
New Roxana head football coach Wade DeVries was extremely excited to come away with a win. The Shells were 1-8 last year. “We faced adversity and turnovers on offense and our defense bailed us out and then offense gives a drive,” he said. “We made some physical mistakes we can fix. The team has come a long way. I am really pleased with the efforts of the kids, especially our running back, Michael Ilch.”
Roxana’s Gavin Huffman connected with Parris White for a 53-yard score in the second quarter. Roxana had a commanding 14-0 halftime lead. Huffman completed eight of 10 passes for 101 yards in the game and was nearly perfect in his passing attempts.
Blake Funk scored Southwestern’s only touchdown with a 4-yard scamper in the fourth quarter.
