22gmail-s1">WOOD RIVER - The Southwestern girls soccer team came out on fire Wednesday afternoon at Wood River Soccer Park and triumphed 4-0 over the Oilers.
Southwestern improved to 2-1-1. Last year, the Birds were 1-9-1.
Jenna Granda, Kallie Christian, Ryleigh Baker had goals and Raigen Baker connected on a penalty kick for Southwestern’s scoring.
Southwestern girls soccer coach Tyler Hamilton praised his goalie Sabrina Burns and his back line for a tremendous effort. He said this was Burns’ third shutout and she has allowed only one goal this season.
He also praised the rest of the team for their offensive effort.
“It just felt good to be outside here against after all the rain,” he said. “They have a big field and we used the size of the field to our advantage.”
The game was Sabrina Burns third shut out of the season.

Baseball
JERSEYVILLE - Jersey baseball defeated Litchfield 10-0 in five innings at Ken Schell Field Wednesday.
Ryan Johnes went the distance in the game. The Panthers are now to 4-1.
Johnes allowed one hit and struck out seven to get the win; he also went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and three runs scored. Brett Tuttle was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Collin Carey was 1-for-3 with two runs scored for JCHS.
Jersey (weather permitting) hosts Quincy Notre Dame for an 11 a.m. Saturday doubleheader.
Softball
JERSEYVILLE -Jersey's girls softball team trounced Litchfield 13-1 on Wednesday at Jerseyville.
Lauren Brown led the Panthers with a 3-for-3 performance with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Jersey is now 1-3 on the season with the win.
The rest of the Jersey hitting was: Ryleigh Jones 1-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored for JCHS, with Peyton Tisdale 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, Sidney Gillis 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Claire Anderson got the win for Jersey, conceding an earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts.
The Panthers travel to Metro East Lutheran for a 2 p.m. Saturday contest.
