JERSEYVILLE - The Jersey D.A.R.E. organization recognized four top Jersey Community High School students last week with scholarship checks in a competition.

The Jersey winners were Blake Wittman, Alec Fry, Caitlin King and Taylor Young.

“We have given away scholarships each year and over $20,000 in scholarships over the years,” Portwood said. “This year we had 22 applicants, which is a high amount and we gave the four scholarships.”

The students have to write an essay and do interviews with the D.A.R.E. Board, then the top four were picked this year.

“Alec is just one of those good kids in school,” Portwood said. “Blake is good at everything he tries to do and is an even better young man, along with being an outstanding athlete.

Caitlin’s future was shaped by experiences from her father, who is a Jersey County probation officer,” Portwood said. Portwood described Caitlin as a perfect recipient of this scholarship honor.

Portwood said Young has such a bright future ahead and is a highly intelligent young lady.
