The Piasa Birds collide with Trenton-Wesclin at 7 p.m. Friday for the East Alton-Wood River Regional championship.
Southwestern head coach Jason Darr said his kids did a great job on Carlyle's best player (Tyler Siever) and held him to four points. Darr stressed the defensive effort was the key to the win.
"Carlyle has one of the best schedules in Southern Illinois,” Darr said. “It was the numbers four and five seeds playing and not a big difference in the two teams. We executed things better than they did. We had some kids shoot pretty well. When you shoot well and play good defense, you have a chance to win ball games.”
