North Greene Boys Heat Up Court In Carrollton
CARROLLTON - North Greene started with a hot hand, darting to a 19-4 first quarter lead, while the Hawks did come back, but it wasn’t enough in a 62-50 Spartans’ win on Monday in Carrollton.
The Spartans led 31-8 at one point in the first half. North Greene improved to 13-3, 5-1 in the WIVC and still in content for the conference championship. The Hawks fall to 4-9 overall and 1-3 in the WIVC.
The Spartans’ Jonah Hopper led all scorers with a game-high 15 points. Josh Hopper had 14 points. Brett Whicker and Justin Lawson totalled ten and point guard Blake Dean added seven.
Gabe Jones led the Hawks with 11 points.
North Greene head coach Brett Berry said he thought his kids did a good job and executed well early to take hold of the game. “We played tough and got good looks at the basket early in the game,” he said. “We lost a little edge in the second half, but this is a conference game and a big rivalry. It was good to get a lot of our guys in action tonight.”
Carrollton head coach Matt Goetten said a team can’t dig itself behind 20 points in the first half and normally come back to win. “They went on a 15-0 run,” he said. “We went away from our offense, but in the second half we got back to the game plan, but at the end, they just ran out of gas. You could almost write the same story every game. You have to credit North Greene; they are one of the better teams in the WIVC.”
The Hawks are home Friday night against Pleasant Hill, while North Greene travels to Brown County for a contest.
