Superintendent Kerry Cox and the Carrollton school district are hosting what Cox views an important town hall meeting Monda
y about school funding.

Carrollton, Greenfield and North Greene are hosting a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14 regarding the passed by the legislature but vetoed by Governor SB1 and any possible resolution to the impasse.

Superintendent Co, along with Dr. Kevin Bowman (Greenfield), and Mark Scott (North Greene) will be speaking on the impact of the current school funding crisis and SB1 veto The meeting will take place at Carrollton Grade School Commons at 721 Fourth St. in Carrollton.

Cox took time recently to discuss the problems facing local school districts recently and said she believes there should be fair and equitable funding for each school.

“I applaud our government leaders for casting a long overdue state budget with severe opposition,” she said. “We need to implement a state funding mechanism so our district can have funding we desperately need.”

After Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of SB1, the legislation that would have reformed how all schools in Illinois are funded, legislators are back at it again trying to either override it or come up with an alternate proposal for the Governor. Carrollton and many of the other rural schools are in a situation where the state education budget approval is desperately needed.

“I stand hand in hand with me fellow superintendents that we need to pass a state education budget,” she said.

Cox pointed out that the district’s expenses continue to rise each year and the district has not been able to increase tax levy’s for the school. Meanwhile Carrollton has made huge cuts in teachers, food service positions, maintenance and transportation costs.

“I went to school in a different time and preparing our kids for jobs today that have not yet been created is our responsibility,” she said. “We have to teach our kids to think and problem solve and give them the tools they can use to see what careers are available to them.”

She said without proper funding, it is impossible to have the right technology in place for students.

She like Scott and Bowman, are in sincere hope that something will be decided soon on the state budget front. She said she believes the Monday town hall meet in Carrollton is important and encourages all residents in this region to attend.
