Eldon "Twirp" Williams, Well Known Area Resident Murdered

ALTON - The Village of Godfrey is in the state of shock today after the murder of a village trustee.

Eldon "Twirp" Williams, 87, a long-time village trustee, was shot and killed in the 200 block of Delmar in Alton on Tuesday.

Williams, a Landmarks Realty agent, was apparently showing a house at the time of the incident. Prior to the incident he was at Godfrey Village Hall, leaving those premises around 11 a.m. He apparently went directly over to the home from Godfrey Village Hall.

Godfrey Village Clerk Pam Whisler said Williams was in good spirits when he left Godfrey Village Hall. She said nearly everyone in Godfrey and the Riverbend area is in mourning today over the loss of Williams.

Alton Police said a person of interest was in custody Tuesday afternoon. More information should be forthcoming.

Mike Solomon, who lives near the crime scene, made this statement about the situation: "I was coming home on my break from work about 12:30 and there were police cars up and down the street. I could see police gathered all around the house where this occurred and police tape. My first thought was something really bad happened here. You don't see that kind of police presence in this neighborhood. At most there is an occasional police car come do a patrol. I didn't know Alton had that many police cars."
